Boot door lock

Long time no see.

I tried to open the boot on my series 2 V6 and got nothing. Muttering the magic words "Open Sesame" and "Abracadabra" had no effect. The release catch on the hatchback door seems to be disconnected from the lock mechanism.

Obviously I need to access the working parts from inside the hatchback door. Working in the boot space from inside the car, (not so easy when you're 84), I undid the screws along the bottom of the trim panel but could not see any other fastenings. The lower edge is now free but the upper part is immovable.

Any advice on how to remove the boot trim panel would be much appreciated.

Regards, DerekW.

Hi David

Remove the drivers side cover for the rear lights.
Low down towards the centre of the car you will find the rear lock to catch drive rod.
Pull this towards the drivers side of the car.
The rear boot catch should now be released and boot open from the rear catch.

Hi Derek,

Don't know whether this bit from the (1996) Owner's Handbook might be relevant:

Opening the tailgate
Unlock with the remote control or the key.
The tailgate lock may be operated independently of the central locking.
- If the key is withdrawn in the vertical position, the locking will operate with the central locking system.
- If the key is withdrawn when inclined at a 45 degree angle, the locking will be independent of the central locking system and the tailgate may only be unlocked using the key.

Not a paragraph that's often read!
May/may not be of help.

While operating the key to onlock the boot, lift the release handle. You may well have to hold the key over quite hard.
