I have been looking at insurance quotes with a view to getting back into XM ownership. I cannot believe some of the quotes I have been getting. To insure a 2.l Turbo it would cost me £468! A Xantia V6 as a comparison would be £423! I should say that I am 53 with never a claim. The reason - apart from the XM that expired on me 18 or so months ago, I haven't owned a car in years - lots of motorbikes but no cars! When I insured the last XM I had just finished driving company cars so the insurance company ( it was SAGA - insert jokes here!) took this into consideration. I cannot remember what the premium was but it wasn't lots. That was over 3 years ago so doesn't count anymore. So in reality I do not have any no-claims bonus. So the only thing I am going to be looking at is a poverty spec XM. Come the revolution they are the first ********* up against the wall!

It really irritates me this, you pay 2 or 300 a year fully comp for a car thats worth somewhere around the £700 mark, yet if it gets writen off you have one hell of a fight on your hands to try and get that money from them.
When first got mine almost seven years ago (how the time fly's  ) it was £1600 3rd party f+t im glad im a bit older now :D

Oh, don't get me started, they're robbing b@st@rds... (And you've reminded me, I'll now have lost the no claims for my bike which is off the road

Note however, that some insurers (including ecar, Tesco, Direct Line and Churchills I know of) will allow you to use no claims earnt on a bike on a car policy, so it may be cheaper to transfer the no claims to your new car policy and pay a bit more on the (now zero no claims) bike policy.

I am insured through a company called Footman James with the bikes. Their quotes were worse than SAGA's! I cannot remember which company it was but I was quoted something like £800 by one!

I'm not sure if a pov. spec XM would make any diference. I've swapped between a TCT VSX manual, pov. spec S1 2.0i, TCT Exclusive auto and 2.1 Exclusive auto, and there was no diference in premium, I just had to pay the swap over fee.

I used to have my Opel Senator insured with Footman James. At first they were about 50% cheaper than everyone else, but after two or three years they were about 50% more than others. I think thay all do that, get you hooked with a nice low price then hike it up a bit each year.

Have you tried the 'Go Compare' type websites? I've used them the last two years and got some fairly cheap quotes.

Ive just checked and when ive fitted a turbo to mine which is an expensive mod to do and taking into account the existing non standard alloys and wider tyres, uprated brakes and lights fully comp is £450 a year paying monthly and im 27, it should be expensive for me! stupid isnt it.

They are banking on the fact that you won't get upto enough speed to do any real damage before you run out of road and you're in the sea..

I hate insurance. Our insurance in Northern Ireland is more expensive in the UK, for some obvious reasons due to our past, and probably a lower standard of driving as well. Too many insurers exclude Northern Ireland also, not that long ago Direct Line wouldn't cover NI.

When I went from the 2.0Si to the 2.1TD as my dialy driver last year, the price didn't go down at re-newal it stayed the same becuase I went up an insurance group, and was driving a car that was 6 years younger.

I am going to look at motor traders insurance, it is a pain in the ass having to juggle cars with the insurers, I would like 1 policy to cover them all. Then I want to get trade plates so I don't have to tax them all, because in 1997 Gordon Brown, the dick, removed the rolling exepmtion for classic cars being tax free after 25 years old. By rights all series 1 CXs should be tax free! (well almost all of them). And in 5 years time the G plate XMs in theory should be eligible to be tax free as well!
