Well Rob, since you're somewhat of an expert in it now, I may well have to pop down and pick your brain about it someday when you're home :D

No Problem, the fiddly bit is winding the cables on the spool correctly. I used bike brake cable, and electrical cable joiners (copper insulated with plastic and 2 screws for fixing the cables in the screws. The cable joiners work a treat, get the smallest you can find, screw the 2 screws out, then push the copper out of the plastic insulation. When you're ready to put the copper end on the cable, tighten the screws until the heads break off and they then fit perfectly into the slots that in the spool and on the sliding mechanism that attaches to the window pain.

Doesn't sound too bad, I think maybe if you don't mind, we could document and photo that and make a step-by-step guide :)

It differs slightly from the other method, but sounds like it works great.

It probably won't be too lung until I have another broken cable, 2 windows repaired, 2 to go! Or if I am really keen, a spot of preventative maintenace could be done!

Right, I've taken it apart now and found that it isn't the cable but the plastic bit instead (again). The window mechanisms are from a series one as my xm originally came without powered rear windows. I've ordered a rebuild kit from ebay BUT, I'm going to re-manufacture the clip in aluminium - that should take care of the problem once and for all, I'll also do a mirror image to cover the other side, I'll post pics as soon as I've gotten round to it.
