An XM is now mine!

Well, it had to happen eventually. After more than a year lurking around here, and being a member for 11 months, I have made the leap and become an XM owner.
For months I read all I could, learned as much as I was able to, all the while letting cars slip away in classifieds and on Ebay- I definitely had some XM "fear". I loved the idea of owning one, but wondered how I'd cope.

Then I attended CXM this year. Ruined all chances of escape. Vince took me for a short trip in his S1 2.1 manual and I was enchanted.

I decided to scratch my Xm itch- by buying a reasonably-priced example. That way I could see if I liked the basic character of the beast on a day-to-day basis without too much involvement or heartache should it all go wrong.
I nearly ended up with a TCT, but fate intervened and I found myself facing a much different proposition. A car I had previously written off as being too lethargic for my needs, the one XM I couldn't own. A 2.1 TD Auto.


After a good chat on the phone with Bob (cornishbob on here, whose car it was) I mulled over it, sent a deposit, booked my train tickets for a long trip, and held my breath.
On Monday this week at 11.30am I got on a train in Glasgow, by mid-evening I was in Kent sitting behind the wheel of what was now my XM, paperwork completed, about to drive off into the rainy darkness in what was completely unfamiliar car.

I needn't have worried, a trip up the A2/M25/M1 showed me exactly why you all love your XMs.
Composure. Stability. Comfort. A relaxing self-assuredness, quietly assiduous in drivng characteristics, a subtle brilliance.
Through completely unfamiliar roads and pretty rotten weather, the XM glided in the way I always imagined it would have done, long before I ever got behind the wheel of one. I'm lucky enough (touch wood trim) to have gotten an XM without any big suspension problems.
I made it to my rest point in Buckingham safe and sound.

I suppose you all want me to shut up now and show you a picture or two.

Well done Rommell. Looks to be an excellent choice. I too have a VSX 2.1 td auto. I personally don't find it too lethargic. Wonderfully therapeutic to drive after a hard day at the office. I tried to pop over for a chat at the CXM, but you were busy chatting to Sandre.

So, what have I gotten my hands on?

It is a 2.1 Exclusive Auto. 92k on the clock. Registered January 1996, probably one of the last Bosch-equipped 2.1 cars. Wobbly Webs already fitted (a bonus as I love them, and dislike the standard Exclusive alloys).
Half leather electric interior, with the suede trim typically bobbly. Full climate control.

Bad points- 3 electric windows not working (not the 1 I was told!), cruise control inoperative, headlamp washers mangled, some body scuffs and scrapes, poor paper service history, very short MOT...erm...that's about it really.
The number plate might not suit everyone...

Later on Tuesday I went to visit Jim as he was a short hop away in Newport Pagnell. After a warm welcome, and making me a much-appreciated cup of coffee, Jim proceeded to pour over my new car with infectious enthusiasm. A Lexia session showed just a few stored faults which were duly cleared. LHM found to be bright green (I didn't fancy trying Jim's suction test but he's obviously an old hand ;) ), suspension all as it should be. He also noticed that my fuel preheater had been disconnected.

Obviously we needed the ORGA number for the Lexia, when I looked it was:

We then discussed his XM (which I am delighted to read that he is now keeping). I then had to leave as I had some BX Speedlines to collect before heading back home to Glasgow.

That evening a 400 mile drive gave me the ideal opportunity to get intimately aquainted with my new purchase.
Heading north on the M6, I really began to doubt much of what I had read about the intractability and sluggishness of the 2.1 auto. I found the acceleration more than adequate (bear in mind I have been driving a 250bhp/260ft lbs petrol car for the last 5 years). I came to the conclusion that it's all about how you drive, rather than what you drive.
Even with the dubious front tyres it was wearing, the handling was very good. I can't wait to see how it is with a good set of rubber fitted. The autobox changes smoothly and swiftly enough. I really started to "get it". The XM experience took hold of me and I simply loved wafting along in this great car.

On Wednesday I started cleaning it up as it was a bit filthy (rather unsurprisingly as it had been sitting in a garden for 3 months). Bodywork was left alone, I'll save that for later.

Roll on to Thursday morning as I left the XM in the hands of my usual garage for an MOT:

Got a phone call a few hours later- a pass. :D

So here I am- XM ownership begins here and I am loving it so far. Long may that continue!

A Tesco's 99p stiff all purpose white bristle brush can make an absolutely stupendous improvement to those
bobbly suede bits on the Exclusive seats BUT just don't get too carried away and aggressive with it. PLUS.
Their 2 quid interior foam (just like the shaving stuff!) does wonders to the door trims and suede insets too.

Looks good and starting out on a promising relationship for you both! ;)

Great to see you on Tuesday and I can say without any fear of contradiction that you have a good 'un there and an ideal introduction to XM ownership...

I thought the MOT would be a mere formality... And it was. Brilliant!

A fellow 2.1 Auto owner...with Bosch pump too. Good choice.... She looks great. I love the wobbly webb alloys too.

Don't let the rather spooky numbers deter. (I wonder if it will do anything on Halloween?!!...just a thought:)

Enjoy it, they are great, and I totally agree with you, it is how you drive them. I have found no real issues with performance. Just one thing I would suggest doing... Check and lubricate your doseur valve linkage. Take it from me..it is worth doing!!

Nice One. I think I spoke to you at CXM...

Looking very good! What are the strut tops like (Look UNDER the wings at the underside of them NOT on hte top under the bonnet)

As for the fuel pre heater, its disconnected for a reason! LEAVE it disconnect is my advice otherwise you will start getting starting problems. The heaters are nautorius for causing fueling issues. They shouldn't of had them fitted... Hopeless!

Thats scarey.. 666 on the reg AND on the Orga!

92k, keep ontop of that auto box and do a transmission fluid change every 10k or less. and DEX 2 ONLY!! Nothing else, not even DEX 3..!!!!
