Took a look at the DVLA figures, now the first quarter figures for 2013 are available

There are just 601 roadworthy XM survivors. That's out of a peak of 18,475 in 1996

509 are on SORN. That's 45% of the total survivors, sitting off the road, unused...

Scrapping-wise, they are disappearing at a rate of 17 a month!

Gosh :o

That means we must do all we can to preserve what's left...

So what turns up at rallies is a big proportion of the roadworthy survivors then?

Which would mean that in 5 years they would have all disappeared.

That rate will drop in the coming years leaving the good 'uns that are worth saving, hopefully with people who want to save them.

I think that the SORN numbers are an underestimate as people started laying up XM's well before SORN came in.
Plenty of Mk2's, particularly 2.5's being offered.
Proving of condition of any XM now requires careful examination before purchase.
Many of the Mk2's will be life expired and only fit for spares as the enthusiast following just is not there.
I give the UK properly preserved XM's about 15 years before the next round of major chassis repairs is needed.
Many of the others will rust through much sooner.
Who knows how draconian the old car legislation will be by then.

John
