Don't forget your data won't show how many cars have been exported over to NI and ROI. DVLA don't publish this data over here for some reason.
I doubt the big drop is a mass exodus of cars coming over here, as I don't see any on the roads. But there will certainly be some coming over.

Interesting numbers, pleased you searched them out and posted Dieselman.
How much trust do we actually put in the DVLA being accurate?
It is still a good guide though on typical numbers.
I assume the bulk of the 300 road legal Mk1's are now core enthusiasts cars so high chance of survival.
There must also be a fairly big batch of SORN Mk1's in the same or similar hands for restoration or spares.
I guess that means the Mk1 total will stabalise somewhere around 500 for the next few years.
Now on Mk2's not quite so easy to manipulate the figures.
A good proportion of the road legal cars will still be cars in the last stage of their working life.
Perhaps as many as 500 still not with enthusiasts.
There is also less enthusiast interest in Mk2's so I guess these may settle at around 150 to 200 road legal cars.
Maybe 200 to 300 will be kept SORN for spares or restoration.
I think those sort of numbers tend to match the number of XM's we are seeing on ebay these days.
My guess on that is the number offered will halve with each year that passes now.
Price is the next interesting thing.
Mk1's have passed the end of the bath tub and price is rising a little.
Mk2's are still close to scrap value and may not move up for another year or so.
It all depends on level of enthusiasts interest and the only guide to that is perhaps site membership.
1275 with Noz and 999 here though not all will be active with some duplicate membership.
So perhaps 500 of us enthusiasts owning half the road legal cars with a similar number SORN.
Does anyone have similar numbers for the older Citroen models in the UK?
Meat for a CCC article Robert?

Bit off topic, but not entirely ------- how many C6 are out there ? I do a fair bit of travelling and they are still a rarity. Strikes me, nowhere near as many shifted as comparable early days of the XM.

Well I was under the impression that there were just over 700 of the beasts out there, but according to the
http://howmanyleft.co.uk/ website it says 914.
