Re-registering a car declared scrapped

Does anyone know anything about re-registering a car that MAY have already been declared as scrapped.

The situation is that the car was taken off the road due to a mechanical problem, it was traded in/left with the garage diagnosing the problem and another car purchased.

The garage then sold/gave the car to another person, but without the V5. The other person now is disposing of is car but doesn't know whether it is actually registered as scrapped or not and it's no good asking the original owner as he is no longer of this World.

Has anyone any experience of this area?

Hi Will

No car that has been scrap can go back on the road, used to be able to buy cars from the yards and put them back on the road but no more.
However, the scrapyard would notify the DVLA when the car is weighed in, a garage wont so i would just apply for a new V5 and all should be well with this one.
If its been across the weigh bridge though there's no going back

That 2.5 I had was declared scrapped by the previous owner because they didn't want to sorn it.

I called the DVLA and they said that it had a scrap marker on it, and that they could remove it when I applied for a new V5. New V5 arrived and had no problem

Call Swansea and see what they have on file about the car.

Thanks Robert, just what I wanted to hear. I intend to ring VOSA/DVLA when I have the registration number.

Was it VOSA or DVLA you rang?

It was the DVLA that I called. Heres hoping you can get a V5 £25 later.

Once you have the registration number check the automated record first.
This will show if the car still exists as far as the database is concerned.
If it is still active then submit a V62 applying for a new V5.
All you need is reg & vin No. Car type and colour.
Then tick the box for V5 not given me by previous keeper.
They charge you £25 for this.
There is a few weeks delay while they make sure there is no paperwork from the PO in the system.
They then send you the new V5 and the PO a £60 fine for not submitting the disposal section of the original V5.
If you are really lucky you find the PO has left some residual road tax.
The aquisition date on your form cancels any existing SORN on the vehicle.
So you must either tax it or send in a V890 form as well to SORN the car in your name.
