Considering a V6 - but what about Battlescar?? advice please

A couple of points here really.
After experiencing the difference between a Xantia and my XM, (I thought my Xantia was extremely competent, but for me, a boring eurobox) the XM is in a whole different league and I'm truly smitten.
However, as most of you will know, Battlescar (my 2.1 TD Auto mk2) is not the best example by any stretch. The odd scratch/mark/dent I can handle, but it does have issues:
1 Gearbox whine is one
2 A previous crash means that the front drivers door hinges have been re-welded on and although the job is reasonable, the gaps around the window frame are too big and create a lot of wind noise. Both o/s doors have also dropped and rub against the 'foot strip' in their respective apertures leading to rusty door bottoms.
3 Both rear wheel arches are also rusty where they meet the rear doors.
4 The 2.1 feels sluggish as compared to the same lump in the Xantia
5 There is a long list of mild but annoying faults.
To summarise: I think the XM is a brilliant car, but I have one that has too many problems to make it an enjoyable car to own and drive. I have to love what I drive and I know the XM is a car i can love, but not this one. I also feel that I'll struggle to find a buyer for mine due to it's history (or lack of) and problems.
So what to do? What to do with Battlescar? Run her into the ground? Scrap and keep some good parts for my next XM?
I now want a mk 1 or 1.5. I really would like a V6. We drive few miles so I'm hoping fuel consumption won't be too big an issue.
So, aside from issues relating to getting rid of Battlescar, what are the issues in buying, owning and running a mk1/1.5 V6?
