Just about to step of the XM boat for a while, and take a trip to Merc-ville.

What's your favourite Cit alternatives?

The only one that cames near an XM is the E300. He will be back when it rusts away and falls apart All the best for the time being anyway.

Have never been able to find an alternative, no car I have ever seen combines the comfort, space and economy (2.1 manual) and the fact that you can repair it yourself. I like the BMW 5 series diesels but no room in them.

Yes it's an E320 Estate, ex demo, so it's got all the toys, and even more than the book offers for that year so that's nice. 2001, beige leather & green, satnav, parktronic, massage seats, and on a Citroen note, self levelling suspension

Going to a great local Merc indie straight away for a check up, so fingers crossed.

Apart from the suspension the main thing I'll miss is the exterior look of an XM, but then you can't enjoy that when your're inside one!

Mercs do seem to be a popular alternative for some Cit freaks, I've known many who opt for this when not floating

Where abouts are you, I might know either of them or another good one.

I like the interior of the W210 and it is much more comfortable and wears a lot better then W211 interiors.

Agree about the 300TD, it's mechanically unburstable. In the main W210 series cars are very tough, but as you say do have a bit of a problem with rust..
Unfortunately Cdi's aren't anywhere near as reliable as 300's and cost heaps more to fix when they do go wrong.

I think that applies to all of them, one of the reasons I won't have a modern car. apart from DMF failing at ridiculously low mileages, as the power has increased so has the unreliability and cost of repair. The old BMW TDS engines with about 150 bhp were almost bombproof, the new ones with nearly double that don't last, well not if you use all that power anyway, I would rather have one that's a bit slower and is not about to bancrupt me

I have had 2 W124's before a 200 & 300, I did know that they've had spheres, but you just don't notice it; when you look on Merc forums, the blokes don't seem to have a clue about the suspension, and say things like 'do you ever change the spheres' etc. I look forward to asking whether mine need changing.

It's a 320 petrol, I love big petrol engines, but on the economy front, i would have loved smaller or diesel, just couldn't find the right combo!! Nice to hear some good comments about W210's, there's a lot of bad stuff on the net about them.

I'm going here on the 26th - http://www.nickgeorgesvehicleservices.c ... vices.html they look pretty good, have the proper Merc kit, and have loan cars which I must have.

I was in a 2003/4 S Class once, and I thought the seats were really hard, so I hope they're not like that. I LOVED all W124 seats, they are absolutely perfect for me, and I'm afraid to say, a lot better than XMs ;-( But we are talking about one of the great family cars of all time, so they should be

It's a Volvo V70 2.5 td with leather and lots of toys for me - sadly this would cost me around £35 - £40,000 for a 5 -6 year old car over here so no chance... would still keep the xm though

I tried the older Volvo's but wasn't very impressed with them, very harsh and noisy compared with the XM, this was a few years ago before I had my first XM, I do like the seats and cabin though.
