OK guys, I am new to XM ownership - and I love my 2.0 CT Exclusive, but what is it with the V6? I find them a little alluring - like a taboo urge, and I have heard tales of horrible things...But am I right that the 24v is a suicidal engine whereas the 'standard' 170bhp V6 is as reliable as you could expect?

And, assuming I ever proceed beyond a mere 2 litres ( ) is the fuel consumption going to significantly dent my enjoyment?

I suppose I'm asking: What is the ULTIMATE XM...?

(Or should I consider the 2.5 diesel???)

The Ultimate Xm for me, has to be any XM as long as it is 100% spotlessly perfect. A show winner, regardless of what model it is.

For my own wants and desires the daddy Xm for me is the series 1 24V V6 Manaul. No real reasons other than rareity appeals to me. If I had a choice between a 24V S1 or a Series 1 Carb model with no toys, zilch nada, I would pick the carb model, especially if it has a brown dash and brown seats for extra classyness. Its as rare as the 24V if not rarer.

These are my ramblings, I haven't owned a V6 Xm, although I have driven a Series 2 V6 XM once, and a 2.5 on a few occasions. John is our authority on 2.5s, and has had V6 modles as well.

Now why would the 24v engine be suicidal?

If you consider 10% +, give or take, is significant, yes .

Actually I found that the year 2000 24v V6 is less thirsty than the 12v V6 and that in mixed driving the fuel economy of the 2.0 was only marginally better.

It depends largely on how many miles you do, there are more desireable XMs than the 2.1s that I drive, but I use my cars, at approaching 20k per year the difference between running a 2.1 td manual and a 3 litre atuto would be getting on for double the fuel cost, although not so much fun, If you have another car that you usee on a daily basis it doesn't matter so much, I do, but that's an XM too

Hi Phil

There is no correct answer to the best XM just plenty of contending models.
Most types are still available and very good value for the money if carefully selected.
The only exception is the 24valve Mk 1 which are few in number, also now collectable so good ones seldom change hands.
So far your decision record suggests only a minor fixation to XM's not total sanity.
It was clear madness to sell on that second XM.
The truly sane cherish all XM's and keep lots if they can.

Maybe it was madness to sell the second XM - not that I think Nigel's too upset about it! But I wasn't ever going to get rid of my BX to make way for two XMs. So maybe I only have s slight XM infection. However my BX affliction is pretty well established

I must say, the XM I have at the moment is gorgeous to look at and it has plenty of oomph, and economy is manageable. But I've never owned a V6 anything... maybe when it does become time to replace the BX, I should consider a green Xantia V6 Exclusive to match the XM

It really has come up a treat, having spent two full days cleaning and polishing, an't seen the missis in days , having cleaned every possable area, right down to taking all the switches out in the centre consol, ! so gone a bit mad , but it has come up lovely!, will get some more pics of it and send them to you,
I have put up a topic about this manifold leaking, to get some advice, il'l get that done and bang it i for an MOT, see what happens.

Having now driven this one, a V6 would be my next Xm, i must admit that mine does pull like a train, for the size of the engine, and size of the car, but a V6 has to be the ultimate!
