Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

HELP - all the brakes are binding on!!

Post by andmcit » Sat Feb 13, 2010 9:25 pm

Just swapped cars over withmy father to try and 'rescue' his 2.1 TD S2. He's gone off to complete his journey in my Activa
and I'm left to try and fathomout what's wrong with the Xm and limp it home. It seems to be the doseur valve is either
sticking on or the crazy mechanism operating it as all four hubs are getting hot and forward progress is clearly being
stunted. The foot handbrake pedal is working fine at the pedal end with the hand release working and the pedal springing
off. Am I looking at a failed primary cable to the centre equaliser? Never seen one of these fail before on an Xm!

To get the car home I'm taking short hops and resting the hubs to cool a bit and for once it actually helps that it's brass
monkeys out here this evening too!! I don't fancy cooking perfectly serviceable hub and CV bearings.

There isn't a dodge I can try here bearing in mind limited light and no tools?

You guys don't have any ideas barring calling the AA out!? Car is about 3 miles from base camp!

Just keep limping for now, 3 miles isn't far. It sounds like either the pedal isn't returning properly or the doseur seals have ruptured or it's sticking.
Without tools you can't get to it.

Hi Andrew

The mechanical linkage that operates the doseur is know to seize up giving a continuous brake application.
Reported a good while ago on the old website. If you have any aerosol in the car ideally WD40 but deicer might work.
Spray through the grille just to the door side of the drivers side washer jet.
You might just get a bit of lubricant on the linkage during one of your cool down stops.

Anyhow, through the wonders of technology the blog is being beamed out live as the 'calamity' is still unfolding!! :P

Ok, 2 and a bit miles left!

I did suspect the absurdly silly Heath Robinson actuator mechanism to be to blame and have tried prying the arm onto
the doseur with the Xm standard wheel brace; it may have helped a bit too. The rear hubs aren't hot after the latest
mile stint but the front hubs are warm but not hot.

Didn't think doseurs siezed up!!?? What I did suspect on this car is things seizing on more than failing as it doesn't get hard
daily exercise being an infrequent use car by a retired gent!

So. Further progress reports as things develop!! Cheers guys!

Hi Andrew

If you have nothing else tip some water in there via the grille.
Water is a good short term lubricant.

Once you've made it home try some hard applications of the brake as that may free off a stuck valve or linkage. The risk of doing it now is that it could jam even more...

Yay, back in one piece - the first few legs of the bunny hops home didn't get too much heat though
now the car does reek of hot brake pad material parked outside the house. The fact that the rear
hubs are getting heated certainly points to the centrally located doseur as a duff primary cable
would only trouble the front hubs. Guess I'll need to have a go at it tomorrow now.

Does anyone know if Xantia doseurs are the same as Xm ones as I have loads of these immediately
handy but will need to do a more concerted dig to uncover the older removed kit!?

Thank you John and Dieselman for your prompt replies - gave me confidence that sensible short
bursts weren't going to totally ruin things.

Hi Andrew

Pleased you made it back.
If it is the stock binding fault then it is simply the linkage seized not the valve at all.
Once the scuttle is off in the morning you should be able to check things out.
Do not know about compatibility sorry.
Paul will know.

Click on THIS link (referenced as suitable for a an XM 2.5TD) and then when opened up, click the 'Down arrow ' adjacent to the Titled box "THIS PART ALSO FITS" which will give you all the XM/Xantia suitability fitments !

The above part/quote taken from THIS thread.

Also in THIS thread which I made a posting after your post, maybe of interest to you !
Had you have forgotten about it already ?

Most common cause of XM binding brakes is the final quadrant lever (the one that presses the rubber doseur valve button) partially seizing and not fully releasing. Either that or zero clearance at the rubber button - specified clearance is 9mm IIRC.
When I had a similar problem I removed the seized quadrant lever, freed it off and replaced it with a liberal greasing of the pivot pin. I also fitted an additional weak spring to the quadrant to ensure that it positively pulls away from the rubber button when the footbrake pedal is released.
