I wish citroen didn't piss about with the steering at all. All XMs should have had diravi!

Yes, you are quite right now I come to think of it, moving the steering wheel modulates the hissing.jorgy wrote:I tend to agree that it is rather a designed feature. I have a couple of schematics explaining the FDV and its relevant pressure regulator cooperation, and the former has 2 different paths to send the LHM depending on whether there's demand or not on the steering. Actually I might be wrong as I seem to remember there were not 2 but 4 possible functional combinations (states), not sure anymore. So I'm not sure it's the FDV or the pressure regulator making that hissing noise. The Diravi'd LHD 3lt XMs, like my V6, have the simple one-inlet/one-outlet/one return pressure regulator and they don't do such a noise.robertmnorton wrote: The hissing of the fdv is normally associated with the steering pinion internal leakage. This is not necessarily a problem as the steering very rarely attains a pinion valve neutral position,as you can affirm by centering the steering wheel and applying light finger pressure left or right of centre and the hissing stops.

But I wish Citroen had put some effort and got rid of the noise. Everybody asks when they enter my car "what's that noise?", "is it broken?"...![]()

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
The problem is they put that peice of junk low pressure Poogoe steering rack in there, not only does it leak lots (I'm sure it causes the very small cycle time on my XM), it's also a low geared peice of junk to use. If you want to like the way an XM drives, don't own a CX as your other car. You will constantly complain about the sh!t steering in the XM
Oh well, no point complaining about it, who here can tell me how to fit CX daravi into the XM ??

Shane L.

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
Could any of you enlighten me, ( being an Xm Virgin )
, now after changing the Accumulator sphere, when i switch it off, the front now sinks slightly , and there is a sound like ther eis depressurization , sound like it's coming from the said sphere ! , could there still be air in the system, cause it dindn't sink before i changed it !!
.
Sorry about this but i'm trying to do this myself , so i get to know these cars a little more, rather than me put it into my local indipendent Citroen guy, and come out with an empty pocket
.
It certainly rides smoother, but is taking a little longer to rise to normal height once started ! Could it be suffering from a little wind in it's system
, and if so what is the best way to check ?????
Nigel

They can do funny things with air in the system but is the 12mm bolt on the pressure regulator done up, not tightly but firmly?

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
As dean says, first check the depressurising screw. Sinking can be caused by wear in many parts of the hydraulics, as long as it stays up when driven I don't worry, but the hissing noise would suggest that screw.

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
Hi Peter & D.
yes it does stay up when driven, it's only when you switch it off, there is a faint hissing , and the front sinks an 1'' - 2'' or so, i will check the 12mm bolt again in the morning, is that bolt the only way to release any air from the suspension system ?, if so is it best to lower the car , switch off, loosen it, re start it, and put it into high, them scramble under and tighten, ?
Sometimes the rear takes longer to rise to normal, but giving it a little more gas, it rises quicker on revs,
Sorry Guys to sound a bit thick !!,

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
The release bolt only depressurises the distribution side of the system, undoing it will not drain pressure from the suspension circuit and it only gets air out from the pump/fdv/pressure regulator if its left open the first time the car is started after work being done in these areas, if it is not undone the first time the car is started (before starting) then the trapped air is pumped into the brake/suspension and steering circuits, citrobatics, brake bleeding and a few turns of the steering lock to lock will sort it though so its no big problem.
The other posiblity is that the little ball behind the 12 mm bolt is not seating properly for some reason or it could be that the increased time it takes the car to rise is because of the now larger fluid capacity of the system now that it has some good spheres on it, the front falling always happens to me anyway, as you get out of the car the front lifts as the weight is removed and the height corrector lowers the car back to correct ride height so if that is what you discribe there may well be no problems.

Re: changed accumulator sphere ! what next ?
Thanks Dean for that , that gives me piece of mind, !, i an't gunna undo the bolt any more, il'l do a good session on the suspension tomorrow, and give her some full lock a few times,
I was just not sure if there is any air in the system, how to remove it properly, il'l give all a go , and hopefully it will sort it's self out,
If the ball on the end of the bolt is not seating properly, can it be taken out "carefully", and checked out and put back / i know it's a bit dodgey
If not i will leave well alone !!!!
Thanks Once Agian, to you all
