Xantia

Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

Thanks, glad to say I still can't find anything wrong on my xant, will have a look again soon. Actually mine still look newer than the rest of the car..maybe they'll become very valuable :) The ones I have on the bench are newer but from a break and in worse condition but how good, I don't know. Will have a look tomorrow.

Broken down. Again.
This time, it's the light switch. Completely dead. No more lights whatsoever.
Checked all the fuses.
Seems I will have to hit snowy continent in the XM, don't know where to find a light switch on such short notice.
I think, she's telling me she's had enough of all that driving..:(
Any ideas some one?

Yeah, 2.1 TD Auto XM!!

If you want to borrow winter tyres and wheels for a Xm Jaap, shout, and you can stick them on on your way through.

Can't help you out with a series 2 light switch, series 1 no problem, if its the same plug.

Ohh, give Willie Jonston (check old invoice for head gasket) a call as he may have some series 2 Xantias lying about.

Well Jim, she's packed it in. Again. My girl rang on my day off last week, all lights were 'gone'. So I had to get the car back during daylight, that was OK.
Checking all things out the next day or so, indeed all the lights are not working so I thought, that must be the switch. But it isn't because the switch does work on the XM which is similar like, Robert found that out. Also found another xantia switch but also didn't work.
All the fuses are fine, I did check that but no current. There is 12 volts on the socket that connects the switch.

AFter a few days the car wouldn't start! Transponder warning light flashing..well at first she would start after this new phenomena, but now she won't even start any more.
Connections of the transponder were checked, connected properly that is.
She was bound for WAles and France and my home country this week but won't be leaving my yard now :(

Now I have to add, that the car once (in 2008) took me through a major flood. I shouldn't have done that cause water kills any car.
It went hay wire half a year later literately, windows not moving, dashboard going bes irk, blinkers working with interior lights and a lot more of that very very strange things. That's how I ended up buying another xantia which was a lot worse.... that's another (good?) story.

I did fix that problem back then, and it was 2 completely rotten wires...I think I am suffering another one of those rotten wires now.
After a long while I did fix it and had a 100 or so thousand miles out of her without any electrical hick ups however, I did suffer from a 'frozen' drive shaft in one of those big freezes....that's again another story, long one too! Water kills cars!

ps can't upload the picture of the corroded wire I just mentioned. 'The image file you tried to attach is invalid.'?

Sorry if this story isn't completely making sense, typing it between things at work....shouldn't, but hey I brought my lap top and I can actually do this!...

Ah yes Jaap, that makes perfect sense and chances are it'll be rotten wires again and/or a problem in the engine bay fuse box. That's often the culprit for transponder problems.

Rotten wires in the loom that runs under the radiator are the most likely and often they go where they are joined (spliced).

Now, I haver the full sets of Xantia wiring diagrams, including the harness (loom) diagrams. If these might help, tell me the exact model, engine and engine ECU type and RP number and I can scan you up all the diagrams you might need to get the fault sorted.

I find all electrical problems are a lot less scary when you have all the diagrams to hand and only wish I had such a set for the XM...

Hello Jim. Glad you agree with my diagnosis, for me the worst possible.

Thanks for the offer, I did manage to get the diagram of the lights circuits, not of the transponder!
It shows for example, that the lights do not operate on relays, as is the case with the XM (or certain models at least, not sure)
I did however, look at the engine bay box, could not see anything wrong here. The big main fuse has 12volts but is of course very close to the battery. What transponder problems could go wrong here apart from visible problems?

A friend who works for our beloved VAG, (he loves citroens and drives them so he's forgiven) tells me how brand new cars, even Porsches , are totall loss if they have somehow been in contact with water. Dealers/garages don't even go near these kind of problems, too complicated nowadays.

I didn't dig deep in the wiring bundle in front of the radiator yet, will do that later. I emptied a can of some sorts in it some years ago to prevent moisture invasion.
