TBH so would I, but on a Sunday and 180 miles from home it was a considered risk. Actually I'm not sure the Police can impound a car for no tax, that has to be DVLA.

The Police used to set up ANPR trap just up from our office...I've seen many an offender turfed out of their car with all their trappings... :D

The mobile ANPR camera traps that I have seen recently were DVLA operated.
White vans with small moving dotmatrix display advising of DVLA check.
Police motorcyclists waiting instructions in adjacent laybys.
Seen four in the last two months.

I have to say over here ive seen both doing these checks although im sure the police use it to inspect the vehicle and driver as the type of person who would risk driving without tax is probably good for at least 2 extra 'solved crimes'.............

If someone buys a car from you they can tax it with the new keepers supplement on the V5 the day they collect it.

Last time I bought a car I took my insurance, MOT and new keepers supplement to the post office before I drove the car off the sellers drive.

As I'd got the train over to collect it the seller even gave me a lift to the post office.

Thats all and well if you have the actuall Registration of the car! and you are certain you actually are gonna drive away with the car..

On the other hand, if your going open minded then you obviously can insure the car, but not got a certificate too tax the car.. thats the "Catch 22" ...

I suppose making sure and deciding you "Are" having the car before you go and collect is the only way.

Exactly the situation I had. I went to view and decided to buy after a test drive so did the deal, then sat in the car and phoned my insurance Co to arrange cover so had no Cert.
In addition it was a Sunday so no chance of a post office being open anyway.

It was Valentines day...I told Mrs Dm I was taking her out for a special day...and I did.. :D

I've seen Pilice ANPR traps and DVLA ones. The DVLA ones are usually a lone driver and vehicle and only report the use of an untaxed vehicle to DVLA, who then issue a fine accordingly. Even DVLA only uplift persistant offending vehicles, usually ones just parked.

Personally I don't think we need to be too scared of driving a car for a single day without tax as long as the rest of the legallities are in order. The Police are only interested in no MOT or insurance.

How long had the car been driven for untaxed and was it a real catch.?

I've also seen cars with big stickers and clamps on at the side of busy roads....for publicity stunts...
