Possible future acquisition!

There is just a chance that I may be taking on one of these in the near future and I wondered what other members might think, approve - disapprove!! Before I got into XMs I had a 1984 900i and I have always had a soft spot for the model. The example that I have in mind is on a 'D' and in mettalic gun-metal grey paint with light grey leather inside and belonged to a neighbour who recently passed away and the car has sat in a garage used for the last eleven years! Otherwise all I know at present is the bodywork and interior condition appears tidy, apart from four flat tyres, with a mileage of around 140K! With regards, Matthew T.

Awesome cars, i love them, if it's a turbo you need to buy it right this minute, an opportunity not to be missed!!
I had a 9000 2.3t CDS of the above vintage for a good while before buying my own XM and a brief stint in an early 900 both of which i liked a lot, the 2.3 will blow the socks off any V6 XM.

Go buy and enjoy.

Go for it! If anything it's a perfect accompaniment to the XM's and both models suits your occupation perfectly!

As it's a Turbo I would definitely have it, the others wouldn't interest me.

They aren't as quick as legend makes them out to be and are really cramped inside due to the longitudal mounted engine, but are interesting. The old joke was that they have as much overhang as they have wheelbase.

Inside storage will really help with preservation during it's 10 year lay-up. Outside isn't so kind.

They are quick and fast but its the huge turbo lag that blunts it.. i LOVE them and wanted johnathan dyanes one which he possibly recently sold... however im a 5dr fan not three..

The 16v 2.0 engine with intercooler was rated 175bhp on full blown turbo... not sure what the lpts were though.. get it mathew and preserve it. Practical classics claimed them a sleeper in the early 90s.. and 140k is very low miles.. i used to see these all the time with 200k plus on them and as sweet as a nut.. another super advantage is gearbox in the sump setup making a clutch change a doddle to do as the box doesnt need to come off..
The 175bhp engine was in the mk.1 saab 9000.. im fairly sure the 900 is the same power in fpt...

With 143 Bhp from the standard 8v Turbo and the most potent being the 16v Carlsson at 185bhp, but with a drag coefficient of 0.41, a 900 Turbo won't be as quick or fast as an XM 2.0i-Turbo.

iirc, they use a reworked Triumph designed engine. Parts are prohibitively expensive, but the turbo is interesting, if often short lived.

Back in the '80's these were the car to have. My bosses had a pair and a friend rolled another one, ripping the tailgate off. 17 year olds and 900-Turbo's aren't a good mix...

I've just checked the specs.
A 900 Carlsson does 0-60 in 8s and tops out at 131mph,
The 900 Tii (post '85) makes 153Bhp, no 0-60 time given, but 125mph v-max.
An Xm 2.0i - Turbo is 0-60 in 9.3 and tops out at 134mph
A V6 Xm is 7.8s 0-60 and 138mph
A V6-24 is 8.6s, (?) 0-60 and 146mph.

All specs taken from carfolio.

A 2.0i SAAB 900 only just makes 104mph. They are very slow.
