Re: 3.0 V6-24 Project
On my car the coil lead was u/s and at least two plug leads. When stripping them down I found the little connection pieces that push into the centre wire were corroded/burned away.

The leads are looking very good Will but you just need a new lick of paint on that front rocker cover!! With regards, Matthew T.

Re: 3.0 V6-24 Project
There is still quite a bit more to do than paint the cam box..but there has been some progress.
I had a bit of a poke about and found some rust... Only showing one side of each, but both were the same and a few extra places as well. The welder got a bit of a work out.
The mandarin bodyshell has come in useful for doner sections, which I removed by drilling out the spot welds. If I hadn't had a scrap RUST FREE bodyshell this could have been a real challenge on the sills, as they were toast, right through all four sections of steel. The jacking points were also removed from the mandarin car and welded on.
Any sections where it wasn't possible or practical to remove, such as the floor and front outrigger sections have been fabricated from either 1.2mm or 1.5mm stainless steel, likewise the rear subframe mount area.
Cutting into the Mandarin car was a bit gut wrenching, but once you see the damage to the inner wing and wheel house area, you can see this car wasn't going back on the road. The the metal is considerably deformed and the seam has been split, tearing out the spot welds. The rear subframe stopped the damage going a lot further into the bodyshell.

Those are some really useful photos, Will, particularly those showing the compartmentalised sill sections.
Reinforces the need to make sure injected wax gets into each of the vertical cavities.
. Presumably this plug only gives access to the outer large cavity, not the slim inner-panel one?

Re: 3.0 V6-24 Project
The plug at the rear theroetically gives access right down the inner sill section, but it's difficult to spray all the way. The centre upright is spot welded onto the outer sill on the lower flat section. Once that rots through, the outer sill loses a lot of vertical strength.
To gain access further along there are a number of bungs in the inner sills which give good access. Also the wiring holes behind the front kick panels.
The centre upright has various cut outs and pressings so it will leak water and rustproofing wax to both sides.
There is no wax protection as built, due to being electroplated. The spot welding causes the initial rust, which then rots the sill, upright and inner sill.
I haven't rustproofed this car yet as it needs painting. and further work.

That is very impressive work Will and you can come and help me with some welding on my Cobalt car over a weekend for free board and lodgings! Regards, Matthew T.

Re: 3.0 V6-24 Project
Hi Matthew.
I suspect that once you start cutting into the sills on your car they will appear rather similar to these ones. This was rather more than a couple of weekends work. Fabricating pieces takes an age, because metal is particularly difficult to stretch and twist to take up any inaccuracy.

Re: 3.0 V6-24 Project
The car is now with the garage Will and I am hoping to call in and check progress later today. I was assured that a thorough job would be done and fortunately I have a complete spare cill to assist fabrication. The garage did not seem too much phased! With regards, Matthew T.
