The colour is usually registered as the most easily identifiable colour, so grey is correct.

VOSA and DVLA won't take the car off you, but may advise on remedial works. As before, use the opportunity to buy a MIG welder and do the job yourself.

I've never welded before and I wouldn't want to start on something like the XM, I have someone in mind to carry out the work 👍

MIG welding is easy, I would use this as your opportunity to practice.

Buy a machine that has full, variable control of current output and wire speed and a full size gas bottle and all should go well. Just be sure to follow the weld with the nozzle so the shield as is covering the weld properly and there won't be any poor welds. Tack the new plates all round before seam welding.

Thanks for the advice, it is greatly appreciated. I'd love the opportunity to learn welding, and maybe in the future it's something I'll consider. But I honestly wouldn't know where to start.

Welding is possible for the DIY-er but please do follow some course or training. 95 % of what you will learn will be is safety safety and again safety.
Even when you do not understand the theory of what you are actually doing whilst welding, you do need some serious safety awareness. As for practise, you do need a bit of good practise as well, before you start on these sills. It certainly is a nice challenge!

I won't start with all the accidents that I know of whilst welding....let alone the very bad welding jobs I have seen over the years. And then there are still people who technically know how to weld and still take all the risks. Hope you'll take my adivce :)
