Back on the road again!!

I am pleased to report that the 'Gold car' has just been returned to use after rather an extended rest period in my garage. It was a bit if a shock to find the last MOT expired in January 2013! Although the car was previously due to come off the road, by coincidence the brake doseur valve then began to leak, which turned out to be the usual split rubber button. I had an MOT booked yesterday and following a short drive and pre-test check I noticed a drives-shaft offside gaiter was badly split, although the garage very kindly made a temporary repair. Amazingly I then received a pass with no advisories, which is quite impressive given the age and over three years since the last test, although admittedly there had been quite a lot of welding previously on the cills. The suspension on the car has always seemed acceptable enough, but now despite reasonable movement the damping is extremely poor. In the eight years I have owned the car nothing has been replaced hydraulically apart from the accumulator sphere and lhm and it seems the other spheres were last changed in 2004!! I hope to drive her to the X Rally all being well. With regards, Matthew T.

Looking very nice too! The sun was obviously shining on you today.

Wiltshire is just cold, wet and grey.

Thank you Rob, although I must confess the photo was taken when previously on the road, in fact en route home from the 2012 X rally! Regards, Matthew T.

 It can't be that long Matthew since it's last been on the road? Blimey!
Anyway, I have to say, I really like this car. 8-) I was never a massive fan of champagne gold Xm's, but I am totally convinced now. It's a lovely car. Look forward to seeing it at the X rally. Brilliant result on the MOT. :D but sounds like you need a bit of sphere changing done. ;)

That should be two gold cars at x rally then..

K47 BAN .. my grey sd 2.1 manual also passed mot this week with zero advisories and has been pressed into daily use and since monday done 300 miles already!! Though a bit alarmed to what seem to be ablut 200 miles from 30 quid of fuel..

However.. i hope to be at X rally in the 24v with a few new mods to her though not visually.

That's a rough measure, but works out at 15ppm, which seems about right.

I fitted a new outer driveshaft gaiter and complete set of suspension spheres last weekend and the latter have completely transformed the car. The ride is about the best I have ever experienced in a XM, very nice and floaty and it really does feel like the magic carpet experience! Both the two hydractive spheres were punctured I think as the quantity of lhm omitted on removal was significant and quite dramatic! Regards, Matthew T.

What brand of spheres did you use?

With the number of XM you have, a sphere tester and re-gassing rig is the way to go.

Really can recommend the regassing kit, Matt.
In your situation, it would pay for itself quickly.....and you'll know the job's properly done.

I like this car, looks really good in gold, this is the one where when you first bought it it had the crank seal done but turned out to be leaking from another source wasn't it?
