My Citroen XM Prestige 1992 K

I've owned lots of XMs since 1992, all automatic and no diesels. The best was my 1996 3.0 v6 Estate in silver which my mate managed to drive to its death...long story.

This Prestige (RP 5665) is one of two that I have owned, the other was dismantled and scrapped by me around 10 years ago due to a stuffed engine and rot in the sills. This one was my everyday car until 2000 and I covered all of its 167,513 miles in it myself. It was cleaned daily and serviced every 3 months.

The only warranty work I ever had done was related to earthing points which were also covered in a couple of recalls. All the paintwork apart from the nose cone is original. The wheels were brand new and cost £165 each a while ago.

I used this Prestige just three times between 2000 and 2005 covering under 100 miles in those 5 years and dry stored it in a heated and dehumidified garage for the last ten years until this morning. Over the last few weeks I have been recommissioning it - new plugs, HT leads, coil pack, oil and filter, fuel filter, coolant, wheel nuts, number plates, headlights, indicators, fog lamps, tail lights, side rubbing strips (just got two more to do), air filter, battery and a wash and vacuum. There is no rust anywhere as I waxoiled and greased the underside of he car every so often from new. The spare wheel carrier is almost mint and the spare wheel/toolkit is unused and clean both having been wrapped from new.

The radio is useless.

I stored it away in 2005 after spending way past its value on a full cambelt/water pump service, a new radiator, callipers, tyres, full exhaust etc. all carried out by Warners of Tewkesbury who were my local and preferred Citroen dealer.

I drove it this morning for its MoT and it failed on wiper blades, headlamp alignment, one side repeater bulb and an offside front steering rack gaiter.

It's nice to be behind the wheel again. I just forgot what a slug it was, though, as its around 200bhp lower than my everyday cars. I shall take some more pictures this week.

I have the opposite feeling. My XM is like a rocketship compared to my 29bhp 2CV! Look forward to more pics.

I know what you mean. But in the real world, a 2CV can easily cope with traffic speeds. I've had 5 since 1977 and must say they are the simplest, most reliable, comfy, dangerous and terrifically enjoyable car to own. An acquaintance was killed in one, though, around 30 years ago when a moped T boned him at a junction and ripped right through the side of the car. I, myself, hit a GPO van in my Dyane around 1984 and that wrote off my car even though the actual impact speed was only around 5 or 10mph. I'd like another! And a padded suit.

Warners of Tewksbury..... So do you live local to me Brad? I am in Cheltenham.

Looks like your XM is a very fine example, glad to see you have dusted it off and intend on using it again. Great stuff. :D
You must bring it to a rally...

Not far away - in a village near Evesham.

Car rallies dont really interest me. But I may make an exception... :o

I took some photos of the Prestige today in one of my garages. Sorry if the light is a bit lacking.

That looks lovely. Very nice indeed, you even have the jacking point covers!
Strange spec the Prestige, you get part leather interior, aircon panel yet only the basic warning display. No dot matrix.
Very nice colour though.

Thank you. Glad you like it.

Yes, I bought a couple of sets of new jacking point covers from the dealer 15 years ago. I still have quite a few in my spares.

The Prestige was a budget luxury car, really. Low rent engine, high spec seats but no electric adjustment on them. Nice alloys but only a plastic steering wheel. A really odd mix of materials - leather seats, fabric door card inserts and centre armrest.

Anyway, everything works as it should. Testament to over servicing and the fact it's only ever been wet a handful of times and totally 100% bone dry for the past 15 years.

One of my favourite cars.

Very nice Brad, I like it a lot its a good clean original car in a lovely colour.
The prestige was amongst the last series 1 cars, it was a poverty i spec xm offered with sunroof and climate a/c with leather limited edition? Alloy wheels and abs presumably as a garnish to shift some stock, the si which is technically a model up has front foglights?EElectric seats, digital display, puddle lights, variable wipe etc etc which are all absent on the prestige model.
