My XM has always had a heavy clutch, and I've increasingly found the gearchange unpleasant. There were times on the 500+ mile journey I've undertaken in the past two days that I felt the clutch was definitely dragging. At times, gear selection was very clunky indeed, with reverse impossible to select without a crunch.

Getting to the stage that I think it could really do with at least a new cable. Are they actually available? There is a distinct creak in the pedal box/bulkhead area.

A heavy and dragging clutch indicates it is well worn and/or has a buckeld pressure plate. With a new clutch it will be light and not creak.

As I feared. I guess I have been putting this job off pretty much since I got the car! It has been seeing more use than I expected - 1500 miles this month alone, and there are still a few days left!

Changing the clutch on these isn't too bad as there is room to move the gearbox sideways over the subframe and remove the clutch and post the new one in.

Yeah, you've tried selling me that task already. I still don't much fancy it. Hoping to earn enough in the coming weeks that I can pay someone to do the job.
