So, I managed to find a cheap XM! Shown here with my Rover. I'm selling the Rover tomorrow, then catching a train to go and collect the XM.

117k on the clock. Sills (back end) will need tickling with a welding stick but it generally seems very sound and fairly (by hydraulic Citroen standards) dry underneath. Has MOT to January and set me back just £375. Downsides are that it stinks of cigarette smoke inside and needs a thorough valet and there's no history to suggest a timing belt change (just a regular annual service regardless of miles - usually 4000pa). Also, there's an infuriating rattle somewhere near my right ear, which is either the door trim catching somewhere or the seatbelt mount - it seems a little loose. The regulator doesn't seem to close on tickover too. Raise the revs and the pump shuts off and accumulator tick time seems very healthy. Mind you, the car has been standing for a few months.

Really looking forward to seeing how this pans out.

A few thank yous. Dieselman - the story begins when he let me borrow his lovely Mandarin 2.1 for a Practical Classics photoshoot. First XM I'd ever driven. Matt Smith (not sure if he's on here!) for letting me drive his and Charlotte's 2-litre petrol XM. David Hallworth for letting me drive his V6 at Cosford.

After several years of BX ownership (on and off), it's nice to have made the jump up to XM while I still could.

Good to hear Ian.
Where did you source that one? It has slipped under my XM radar!

Best of luck with it and I hope it serves you well.

Rohan :)

This is good news.
I've had to wet vac mine to get rid of a similar stink, takes a while but well worth doing.

Got tipped off about it sitting at a Citroen specialist in Chester. Also got to have a sneaky look at said specialist's CX Prestige which is likely to be for sale. He's actually selling that one - the XM was just a customer's car being sold in his yard. Very much looking forward to collecting it tomorrow. It is now taxed and insured.

Well done Ian. XM's really suit white. I'd try some Autoglym Interior Shampoo, or failing that some watered down Persil ( alternative soap powders are available ). Good luck. :)

Very nice Mr Wobbler!

My old XM seats responded well to a shampoo with a 1995 Hoover Aquajet I had at the time, unlike Vauxhall seats the water doesnt sink right into the foam and never dry! I used 1001 IIRC, or some Vax fluid from 1985, can't remember!

Well done!

My first XM was a white 16 valve, which with the benefit of hindsight was a damn fine car. Having said that, I have now tried most flavours with the exception of the TCT and loved them all.

Hope everything goes well for you.

Never tried it myself, fortunately I didn't have to but I heard from several sources that the ozone A/C disinfection treatment in vogue today works wonders against cigarette smoke. It's cheap, cheerful and fast.

Welcome to XM ownership - it seems the year for BXers to buy XMs!
