You can cross the Sahara in virtually any car, it's not all huge dunes. A friend of mine took an Audi 100 estate across accompanied by a Mercedes W123.

An XM wouldn't be the first Citroen to cross the Sahara by a long stretch.. The Citroen Kegresse half-track was the first and I believe the very first mechanically propelled vehicle to do so...

The Kegresse story is rather interesting as the Sahara was by no means the only pioneering crossing it made. It would basically go anywhere and it did!

Read all about it in Andre Citroen's biography published by Haynes. A very god read indeed. Our Andre was quite a character!
