1998 XM - 2.1td - Steamy Windows!

Post by turbo_imp » Thu Feb 14, 2013 8:58 pm

RIght,

About time I got a thread started for this car before the for sale thread got too long :)

We have been looking for an XM for some time, as my wife is not 7 months pregnant and we need a family car. Believe it or not, this car was not my idea! After going through the options she came to the conclusion that an XM would tick the most boxes (we have had two before).

This one turned up on ebay and we jumped at the chance to have a look and possibly buy it, and as you can probably tell we walked away with it! It has been sitting in a garage for two years with the last tax disc running out in 2010, there is a partial service history, but it seems to have been well looked after.

So this is one of the for sale photos -

Image

A rather tidy manual 2.1 derv XM, with velour interior too :)

Plans to start -

Cambelt and water pump, two years sitting still won't have done it any favours!
Aux belt, this is looking VERY tired!
Window regulators / cables, drivers front and passenger rear are both dropping into the doors.
Full service, oil, coolant etc
Paraffin in the LHM tank, around 10% to start cleaning out the settled crud.
Dismantle the front struts and inspect the top mounts, not feeling too hopeful about this one?
Waxoyl the currently spotless sills!
Damn good wash, clay, polish and wax, stop the dreaded lacquer lift :)

It has been dark every time I have got home so no time to have a proper play yet, but I did get a couple of photos of the strut tops tonight, what do we think?
Some slightly better pictures below, although my flash and my lens are interfering with each other!

The passenger one appears to be quite rusty under the rubber skirt, the drivers side seems quite solid, with the skirt intact and still bonded to the steel.

I have measured them both at 27mm +-1mm both sides, so no difference there? The passenger side does appear to have contacted the valence at some point with a little witness mark to prove the point :)

They will be coming off at the weekend so i can attack them with a wire wheel :)

More tomorrow :)

J

J

Possibly NOT!

The little "Nick" could be a Sphere removal tool!! They DO come up and can damage the lip when tring to remove the front spheres.. Ive done it with a Plieades Tool on all my XM..

So thats not evidance that the sphere has hit the lip...

Nice one, have you seen my Topic on the 2.1 Manual SD I rescued and started working on last month??

Closer up, they look better. The gaps between the spheres and the scuttle seem equal.

J, put the car on HIGH, and take some pics under the wing of the top of the strut, thats where the REAL truth of the tops condition lies!!!

The ones you taken showing the top side dont mean much, the rubber can be scraped away from the top and the rust cleaned away then under seal applied...

Its under the wings that count!!!

Have a look at my Topic, Im sure Ive got some pics of mine up... (ill just go check)

After my check, YES Ive got pics of my strut tops under the wings.. you can clearly see the starting of seperation between the base plate and the cone, as it push's downwards..

I have actually classed my as serviceable for the short term.. they are certainly NOT desperate! Thats for sure. I know what desperate is, my SED was... Ill have to check see If ive got pics of that one on here...

Strangely, I never took under the wing pictures... I thought I had.. When I took the top off, it was virtually in two pieces!!! The Lip on the bulk head upper was holding it down..

That would be interesting Paul to see your old SED ones. Do you have any pics of the Kingas tops you have fitted too?

Just to reiterate what Paul has mentioned about the rubber on top of the tops, one of mine has badly peeling rubber, I did just simply remove it all and under seal it.

At this rate we will all be photographing our tops from underneath and rating them out of 10!!!

Beaten me to it!

That really has quite obviously had it. Wow....Just goes to show, the rubber can be like new above but below carnage!..It is better to see them like this to get an idea of what they look like.... then when they have gone straight up though and totalled the bonnet.
