Thanks for your encouragement and advice chaps and yes I probably am slightly bonkers, although the work is being carried out at quite a relaxed pace, having finished the main tasks that were necessary on the Germany car. I think the autobox oil coolers were only fitted on V6 engines Russ as my 1993 2.0i turbo does not have one! Sorry Robert I realise I have not sent you an article on the gold car engine refit or a S1 24v comparison, which are still on my mind. With regards, Matthew T.

My 2.1 TD Autos have had extra oil coolers for the auto trans fluid.

They ALL have coolers Mathew, through the cooling system that is mounted on the front of the box. ALL auto box's NEED a cooler as they are dooing much more work.

The EXTERNAL fluid cooler was fitted for Warmer Climate countries, quite why they got to the UK im not sure. However, they are NOT needed here in the UK.. as the cooling system is adequte to cool the box subject to regular fluid changes..

Dont get confused between the box cooler and that small rad... its a market fitted option.

Well tomorrow I am going to rummage around in the engine bay and find mine... I was sure I have one, but it's something you don't really take much notice of. Will now though! I really need to annotate it all!!! :lol: :lol:

Should be there. My 1992 K reg SEi V6 had one. Is easy to spot, however, the SED engine bay is rather stuffed with intercooler pipes, which I think get in the way of it, and may well not have one. Anyway, it sits behind the large rads... cant be missed.. ;) :)

I'm sure I have seen it. Yeah it is a bit cramped in there. Still ....being able to see some road through it all is a relatively good sign!

As I said above, when I did an engine and box swap for a Series Two setup the S2 box did NOT have the pipes for the Rad cooler.. So I took it off the car as it was not needed.

Ive got another S2 V6 engine and Box with 68k or so to go in.. Theres NO external cooler for that either... And thinking about it, the TCT S1.5 I had on an M plate, that didn't have the external cooler either...

I seem it is fitted to some models and not others.... :? :?

My TCT auto and 16V auto never had the oil cooler. I wonder if the Lucas Epic Auto I have has an oil cooler. I can't recall ever paying any attention to it.

Just to confirm the S1 V6 auto has the small oil radiator, PLUS a 'water jacket' device around the oil radiator feed pipe connected across the main radiator, whilst my 2.0i turbo just has the latter cooling arrangement. Interestingly, both the S1 12v manual and auto and 24v also have engine oil cooler 'water jackets' similar to the 12v autobox mounted beneath the filter. Regards, Matthew T.
