Been playing with a Mazda RX-8 this afternoon :D Now there's a car with Citroen DNA all over it... Quirky, a most interesting Wankel engine and such atrocious access that it makes a 2.0TCT look easy

This one won't go and it appears due to ignition coil failure. The problem is that if it's been misfiring for any length of time then the engine may be toast due to bore (chamber) wash so if this is the case then an engine rebuild will be on and that's going to interest me greatly...

Due to the likelihood of the engine being wrecked the car, which is in immaculate nick otherwise, was picked up from the 'bay for an absolute song...

Parts make Citroen stuff look cheap. It has four ignition coils and each one costs over £100. The basic spares to rebuild the engine will leave no change from a grand...

Nice car though...

Same with dad. It was too good an opportunity to miss really. Shame he was so far away or I'd have found him some old banger to trade in... And Siany has been the ultimate benefactor so all in all it worked out. Just a shame a nice 205 had to die to facilitate it...

Ooooo, an RX8 hey Jim. Interesting. I know of a previous owner of one of these. They are extremely quick, but incredibly thirsty on fuel and oil. Not even sure they still sell them, but love the fact Mazda have kept going with the Wankel engine.

So is it to be fixed up, regardless of cost?

The rotor tips on those were prone to wear werent they Jim causing lack of compression. Not related in any way is it to its problems?

Modern ignition coils are garbage in comparison to older proper made stuff. They cost a bomb too as you can see ;)

I remember these when they came out, i lived in Gibraltar then and they were everywhere.....incidentally when i recall falling in love with Citroens upon seeing a black DS sat on the ground as i walked to school each day.....ahh happy days 8-)

I thought Mazda sorted the rotor tip issue. It was NSU with the RO80 that had massive problems.

No all wankels suffer from it, Mazda changed the tip design slightly to make it more durable but usualy the tips break off now and wreck the tub if they get too worn if i remember correctly, my father inlaw re built his RX7 he bought with low compression many years ago and got an RX8 a few years ago that wouldnt run for about £3.50, absolute b£$£%£d of an engine to work on and as Jim points out parts are as dear as poison, he decided to get a 300bhp Porche to replace it, far less heartache and not so much of a lube drinker , trouble is you can buy a good driving car for £1500 to £2000 no worries so it makes buying one thats gone bang for £500 and getting the engine done a bit un apealing
A rebuilt RX8 engine could be good for 50-70k though, maybe.

50k on the clock already with a new engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........and now owner had enough

77k already with re built engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

And so i could go on

I really was under the impression they had sorted that out. Huh! Why on earth do they persist with the Wankel engine then....
Well...keep well away from them then.
Shame cos I thought, in principal it's an interesting piece of engineering...just clearly flawed.

very interesting engineering, power delivery is very good too but honestly, to me, your better off with a V6 alfa or something like that but thats just my opinion.
