If they have been kept in the plastic bag they will be fine, I wouldn't worry about them at all.

Thanks Dean for your advice. They do look in fine fettle and are all sealed up.

Next inexperienced question!!!
Sorting out the headgasket thickness. The original one from the looks of it is a two notch. Would the replacement be another two notch or a three notch? ;)
I did ask when the head was skimmed and they took the minimum off. 0.05 or 0.06 mm I think it is. Anyway they suggested normal gasket thickness. Whatever that would be....

The piston protrusion is what dictates the gasket thickness.
If two notch came off, fit two notch.

Regarding the valve stem seals. When new the rubber is soft and easily deformed, when aged they are like hard carbon. It's the heat of the engine that ages them.

Fantastic. :) two notch it is. The old gasket has two holes stamped i nthe little tab at the side, so it has to be that.

The valve stem oil seals I took off the head were still soft. So if that's the case that they go really hard when they fail, they were 25 years old and 172k, which means these ones should be okay. Brill!

Just checking, I have measured all the old headbolts and they seem to be 150mm. Mine have the thick washer and are the upgraded ones.
So new ones I am assuming would be 150mm again. I ask only because there are three sizes.

The tear down has begun. Again.... Well I say that, but all I have done so far is loosen the hubnuts!

Update on progress. Engine is out...as of yesterday. The destruction.... I mean careful dismantling has begun. :)
Noticeable coolant staining on the left... if your looking at the back with the gearbox on the left... of the engine. Bolts are a little more difficult than one on the spare engine. But so far so good.

Why is it, the first thing I want to do when I get the engine out is stand in the space it has just left!

A query... there are three coolant channels on the block ( inset between the bores next to the headbolt holes on the exhaust side) that seem to have restricted flow holes. On my siezed engine, they are perfect. Typically! On the engine I am working on, they are not... infact quite a bit larger. I did initially think they were full of coolant corrosion, but clearly not. I'll try and upload a pic. Is this an issue having much bigger holes do you think 2.1 experts?! :|
