Well heres A LATEST Update with the ever creeping up Rally in telford on the way..

Put the engine bits back together. The battery box was off, the Air con dryer was missing etc.. anyway. That bit done.. I still had a small hole under the passenger B pillar so treated the area with Kurust, filled the hole and got underseal protection on..

Next - non functing washers both motors siezed through lack of use..

So off with the wing, however, the scuttle was Rivited to the wing tops!

Spot the difference! Early wing with round holes for the pop rivets, later wings changed to the plastic lug with screws. Not sure when the change happened, but my Wing - a 1991 is rivited, the other one a 1992 wing has the lugs. Incidentally, I was very pleased to see ALL tags and lugs all in good order on my wing..

Also here further down, the "Tag" that holds the wing in place (posted else where) ..

I think a REMINDER: Regular checks behind the Plastic wing guards is ESSENTIAL!

Heres what I found on mine after bringing the wing away..

The car has been off the road for ooooooooo three years! And yes its all still very damp and wet!! After clearing soil, worms, wood lice and spiders eggs, I then had the pleasure of finding this:

Yes, its a hole in the Cill, thats hidden behind the lower wing curviture when its in place! Thats gonna need sealing before Cosford.

So, swapped the washer motors, and thought Id have a quick look at the level sender.

Ever wondered why they stop working, or dont in the first place..

Well you either have the following: A broken Leg:

Or, copper corosion that builds and prevents conduction. I THINK.. Anyway, managed to find a fairly decent one.

After trying to fill the bottle, it bubbled out the filler more then anything, so a quick mod needed..

Now, no filling issues and water pours straight in. Ive left my wing off temperaly to dry out on the lower part, so I can treat it while its still in good order, but now with fully working washers, we are another step closer to MOT. Need to swap rear tyres, do a final light check and horn get some front wipers.. and go from there.

Im thinking then of putting her in for a profesional Valet! Think it will be well worth it...

So thats where Im up to so far..

Can you measure the diameter of the washer level sensor, so that we can find a contact-less equivalent?

On my all the XM I have had the scuttle cover screws onto the wing, one being a 1990 car. It's strange how yours is riveted on.

Great to see the progress Paul...Mine should be going in for welding next week if i can arrange it.

What inspires me the most is see these difficult sections getting re built and welded up gives me a heap of hope for the odd shaped bits of mine that need doing.... :)

Great to see such an early xm coming back to life...and also a 24v too 8-)

Interestingly my 1989 V6 has the rivets, but only that car! Regards, Matthew T.

Well.. I thought Id tackle this Cill Hole today.. thinking of just filling it for now to seal it up...

The hole went from this..

to a bit of prodding, I ended up to HAVING to weld it up... The patch says it all..

Started to clean it up, and it got bigger and bigger..

Its one good thing that Im able to weld drop of a hat enableing to get it done properly and sealed up.

So thats sorted, wing back side cleaned up, and also a coat of under seal applied and all fitted back on and looking..... urrm.. ok.

Side repeaters not working, so popped them out to find entirely corroded connectors in the plugs.. anyway, bit of emmery and a clean up had them working again.

I also fitted a pair of rear spheres to her, as the current ones were.. urrm Bouncy.. and now she is inceadable soft!

I couldnt resist though, and temptation got too much and I had to have a quick blast up the lane! Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it was Sooooo nice!! Worth it.

So, apart from a Valet she is needed I think Im MOT ready now...   :) :D :D :D :D
