Went shopping today with MRs DM and found the boot lock wouldn't unlock, even using the key.

On getting home and after unloading I decided to tackle it. I got the boot to unlock by holding the key over in the unlock position and operating the handle. This took several attempts before it worked.
The root cause was the central locking servo had jammed in the retracted position, which then held the lock mechanism tightly locked. I removed the servo, banged it hard on the ground a few times, lubricated the arm and squirted into the unit as best possible, via the connector, then lubed all linkages and the handle.

The result is not only a lock that responds to the central locking, but the lightest operation of the release handle I can remember.

Get lubing your locking mechanisms, cost pennies, saves a lot of aggro.

The car has been sitting outside, unused for some time so has suffered damp ingress, not helped by removing the rear lights to tint the light bar and there being monsoons, so the interior has considerable condensation on the windows. Time for a blast to air the car.
I needed to go to town, so went there then hopped onto the motorway and have done about 80 miles. At one point on a slip road from a motorway into an A road, I whizzed past a BMW 6 series on a sweeping bend. The driver must have been peeved at an old Citroen whizzing by so gave chase...

Citroen 1, BMW 0.

I like. Very impressed. (it would have been BMW1 Citroen 0 in my TD)

How on earth can you outrun anything let alone a BMW 6 in a 2.1 TD :)

Interesting Will, I had the same issue with the tailgate on my series 1, intermittent refusal to open and had to be freed up using the method you described.
Eventually all the harsh treatment resulted in the breakage of the little plastic linkage / hinge between the metal rod which comes from the servo to the one which actually operates the lock. A 'fix' with cable ties was unusually less than satisfactory and resulted in intermittent failure to lock / unlock due to not being the correct shape and working the rods slightly out of position over the course of several lock/unlock cycles.

So everyone, take Will's sound advice and lubricate yours before it seizes up and breaks something, or at the very least leaves you struggling with the boot in pissing rain when you desperately need to get something out of it!

Re the BMWs, funny isn't it, I find that a lot, they actually seem offended or something that anything has overtaken them, let alone an old Shitroen.
I quite regularly encounter the Luftwaffe happily pootling along motorways or dual carriageways at 10-15mph below the speed limit, but the moment anything starts to overtake them they either accelerate, or allow the other car to complete the manoeuvre then immediately overtake it, before settling back down to below the speed limit! Have seen this go on for miles sometimes.
