Citroen republished the Owners manual for every model year and occasionally mid year.
Some while ago I put up a list of the books and addendum pages.
Book numbers are printed bottom centre of the outside back cover.
1990 model year book is marked 020 GB 7.89
1991 model year book is marked XM-GB-5001
It is the latter book that you need I suspect as the 1990 book does not include diesel models.
I have scanned copies of both books available as pdf's but the club website does not let me load files that large.

How many PRV engines ate themselves alive in the first 3 years before Citroen decided to look again at their recommended oil spec then? is the question
.

That is a fair comment Dean, but why did they in the end revert back to 10/15W40 oil for both V6?

Here is the advice for the 12 and 24v to 1993:

1989 12v - 10/15W40
1990 12v -10/15W40
1991 12v -10/15W40 and 24v - 15W50
1992 12v and 24v - 15W50
1993 12v - 10/15W40 and 24v - 10W40

My guess is that the handbooks correspond to model years as follows:

1989 - 89
1990 - 5001
1991 - 5002
1992 - 5003
1993 - 5004

With regards,

Matthew T.

I wouldn't change from 10W to 15W, as 10W will give better cold flow. The 40 or 50 designation is in respect to the hot oil film, thus a thicker oil gives better protection in a larger clearance engine.

I have gone for Total Quartz 10W-50 to give a wide range, without the likelihood of oil breakdown, as can happen in some very wide ranged oils. i.e. if you went for 0W-50, the chances oil polymer breakdown are greater than 10W-50.

I wouldn't expect a thicker oil to be good for quoting sticky hydraulic tappets, just the opposite would be more appropriate.

Anyway, the cans say "Racing" on, so it must be the right stuff...
Interesting. Okay I will upgrade to 10W-50. But the sticky hydraulic tappets should not be an issue soon.
It's having a tappetectomy!

The engine will be ripped out tomorrow all going well. Taken all week, but I work v......e.......r.......y slowly! I don't trust my memory one bit, so I have to label everything. And I have only done afternoons rather than full days.
The replacement head is rebuilt. Headgasket arrived. Other bits in transit. Hopefully get stuck in this weekend. :)

Okay I will upgrade to 10W-50.
Unlike the V6, the Citroen XM handbook recommendations for the diesel engine does not waiver from 15W40 Russ, or are you changing in the hope of reducing tappet noise? I tried other oils in my 1990 12v auto original engine with that same intention, but sadly there was very little change! With regards, Matthew T.

Yeah... not sure now. knowing the tappet thing hopefully won't be an issue, it's wether to just protect the engine, or go for Wills suggestion of a half way measure between 10W-40 and 15W-50.

It seems to get easier each time I do it Dean.... which I suppose you could take as a good thing. ;)
