UPDATE: I need to bleed the ABS block, re-wire the horn, and remove the headlights for cleaning so I decided to remove the front bumper, just to see how much more room it gave me. The passenger side bumper mount was rusted quite badly and I resorted to using a hack-saw to remove the bolt. Didn't quite go to plan and in frustration I just cut the bracket off. I managed to remove about 5lbs of mud and rusted metal from the wheel arch liner under the wing! Then I realised the whole bumper doesn't come away, it just covers a front cross member, so I gave up.

AHHH, yes the bumper mounts. Famous for rusting and disappearing. My passenger side one needs a little strengthening. But I'm delighted at how both are in generally great condition. Sorry Ray didn't mean to rub that in.

The bumper pulls forward with the metal support still attached. It plugs into the chassis rails.

Today I re-wired the horn, removed the headlights and soaked the inner lenses in 12% peroxide, the XM then thanked me by snapping it's bonnet cable. I swear this car is cursed.

Remove the centre slat out of the grill... Useually 2x t30 torx screws and then you can access the cross rod that is connected between the two bonnet locks to open it again..

I've already opened it, but thanks. I need to replace the cable, are they still available? Has anyone done this before? Is it difficult?

Cables are in two halfs.. And theres two versions.. Early ones and later ones i think after 1992.. However the later ones replace early ones.. Difference..

Early: the cable from the release is longer and is joined nearer the battery box area ... And theres a second piece that then goes to the top of the headlight.. My guess is the front half has snapped.

Later ones.. The cable from the release is shorter and the second piece is longer .. They were sold as a set to replace the early ones.. I doubt they available now.. I think it might be an idea to get some made prehaps by speedy cables.. Firstly the join block position needs locating. Its a black pastic housing that the two ends of each cable connect inside it..

It's snapped at the handle, I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find it.

Thanks Paul.
