Mind you, Mercs have nothing on Range Rover Classics. Mine is up on a ramp for its MOT (I am in a dispute with the supplying dealer who said there was no rust on it when bought), and the friendly inspector who was encouraged to do his best possible inspection on the car now has more iron oxide on his garage floor than there is car on the ramp...and I have kitchen colanders with more waterproof properties!

Take it from Dieselman - he has both - XMs have nothing on Mercs of the same vintage.

Wow! Oh dear....I hope the Rangie is fixable. Sounds a bit expensive however. I had a friend at Uni who used to borrow his Dads LWB Classic Rangie with air suspension. That had amazing ride comfort, but agian, there was obvious rust bursting through. His other car he owned, but tended not to drive, was a Merc SEC V8 with the accompanying fuel consumption! He ended up smashing that into a tree and nearly killing himself. It self accelerated at some traffic lights, hit the tree, rolled over and threw him out and burst into flames. Not good!

I thought it was general knowledge Mercedes are really bad for rust. I've seen them here in Connemara with body works resembling well: wrecks. They are very bad for rust indeed. Xantia' s are extremely rust proof, but I've seen rusty Xara's here as well.

I knew the 70's Mercs were bad for it. But then everything rusted badly in the 70's. But I think it's just not expected of a really premium car to still rust.

Hey ho, Vince and Dean have made me very jealous, so I'm going to sort mine out soon ish! The rear subframe is my priority.

Paul, you need to get some determination to make it happen. You have several candidates so make getting one on the road a top priority... Remember you HAVE to bring one to CXM. It's the law ;)

Well, after al the revelations in this thread I'm now scrapping the idea of getting a Merc... All joking aside I'm really quite horrified. A premium German car that all and sundry reckon is the bee's knees is actually a load of rubbish..

Ironic isn't it that the cars those very same people think are utter rubbish [Citroens] are in fact far more durable.

It's a funny old world...

Who says it needs to be a diesel Paul? You have a Xantia that runs on that stuff for the daily grind..

One of your V6s should be next up for some TLC surely?
