That's great Dean. :D
After all that time and effort, only to find it doesn't meet your expectations, would have been awful.

That gearbox sounds amazing. 8-)
I think for their era, XM's are surprisingly modern to drive. Yes they creak a bit. Those Blimmin arm rest lids do on mine.
On my grey one, the rears were glued in place! Still I forgive it these little characteristics!

. . . Like an old and favourite slipper, but an extrordinarily well-engineered one.

As soon as you get to know even a little about what goes on under an XM's skin, driving one can become a very absorbing experience, with the car reassuringly letting you know as it approaches its limits (on the very rare occasions that it does), whilst at the same time, it just has to be one of the most relaxing and cossetting cars to drive, or be a passenger in - and one which the vast majority of drivers never discovered.

Great work, Dean!

I think what helps is it is an experience to drive, very different, an old astra feels very much like an old escort but an old Citroen doesn't if you see what I mean it doesn't feel old it just feels odd, but good, the brakes, the weighted steering and most importantly the ride are all rather unique. If you that sort of person I suppose it just makes sense, unlike this paragraph.
The squeaks and rattles will be ironed out, I will probably drive the long way into the mot station Wednesday, just to bed the brakes in and give the engine a good run prior to emissions testing you understand.

Is it possible to drive the long way on the isle of Wight?

As far as the steering weight goes. The XM was recently voted the 5th best steering feel car of all by Car magazine.

That's a bit of a turn from the normal attitude Will. And yes there is a long way, it is after all longer than the short way, just.
Just been out again tonight and the reason it felt so fast was because it was, the speedo gets to 20 then jams solid, if it doesn't free up I will have to get the clocks out and give it a looking at tomorrow evening.

LOL. Is kick-down impressive at 20mph...

That's a weird fault, maybe a clout on the binicle top will fix it.

 a thump gets it to jump to nearly the correct speed, maybe a few mph below what its doing, it falls fine when slowing, I hope a liberal application of use will fix it.
The local dealer was surprised to see me today, and a few eyebrows raised when they learnt I still had the car.
