Thanks everyone for your tips and advice. Jaap if you can find a filter head, then yes i would be very interested. Many thanks for your help. The diaphragm must be rubber. But must admit, if it means bypassing with a better filter and Granade primer then I'll do that.

Would any fuel filter and granade primer do?

I have never seen any sooty smoke from my exhaust. Quite surprising, as I have seen black smoke from the C5, which is clearly a newer car.

Right I'm off filter shopping. Annoying as I have just ordered a new canister filter for the service.

Been exploring new filters and priming bulbs.

What are people's opinions on these. They say they fit a 2.1... Not sure..any ideas?

I've never seen diesel filters like that before Russ

When I first looked at them I thought they were petrol filters as the casing looks very similar...

They will doubtless do but they will need plumbing in and you'll need to acquire a grenade too...

I'd be happier with something a little more traditional personally...

I have a spare purflux filter unit that you can borrow - it is complete and was working OK when taken off the car.

It is my only spare so don't want to let it go permanently but if it gets your car back on the road ...

When I had this sort of starting issue on my white XM - it was caused by a failed injector. The slightest bit of air getting in will cause all sorts of problems.

Just removed a grenade bulb type arrangement off the blue estate as it had collapsed and was letting in air too.
