3000 rpm at 28 mph/1000 revs = 84mph ish, 70 should be 2500 rpm.

Thanks for Wednesday.

Hi george

The difference in torque was one of the reasons I sold the BMW, I was everlastingly stalling it, for a 2500cc six cylinder it was very dissapointing, it was good once you got to about 2500 rpm but that's not what diesels are about, I suspect that those characteristics were given to it to appease the petrol heads. Compared to it the 2.1 is almost like an auto with very little need to change gear, mine will pull from tickover quite smoothly and you don't wear the clutch out pulling away.

The 406 Hdi I have has pretty good low down torque but doesn't deliver it as smoothly as the XM. I think that 2.1 engine is the best IDI ever made.

70 mph comes up at about 2400 rpm on mine and I can't hear the engine at that speed and that's as fast as I drive :D

What?! Am I going so fast. My tachometer often tackles 2,800+, where the engine steps up the volume.

70 at 2,400 Peter?! That's for sure not like mine, I wish it was -imagine that one thing I've been thinking of the 2.1td XM is what a complete car it'd be with a 6-speed with a looong 6th, just for cruising comfort to suit the rest of the car's level. Still, I have the right tyres for the year, 195 65 15.

I'll take notes on my next drive. This said, if I'm going faster than I thought, I can only say I'm in cloud 9 with the consumption I'm doing!

Peter, I should be getting an HDi Xantia after Christmas so it'll be interesting to compare with the 2.1td in day to day life with both.

You won't be dissapointed - except perhaps with the seats and space.

All my XMs have shown around 2400 rpm at 70 mph, but as dieselman says if everything is accurate should be 2500.
