I know ...I have just had a re read. You didn't mention you had replaced that panel for the mandarin one. That's why I was slightly confused there!! But yeah, good job. I left a response on your blog.

The brake light failure is of course the switch on the brake pedal. I can probably make a temporary repair, but it really needs replacing, as it has melted the plastic tab that presses on the contacts. Do all manual XMs have 3 wire brake switches, or only those with cruise control?
Yes, the plastic tabs melt, especially quickly on the AT models. I've glued in aluminum tabs on both XMs I've owned. I've read some Dutch owners have fitted relays.
AFAIK the brake switch on all models has 3 contacts with 3 lead wires for the CC models and 2 wires for a non cruise equipped model.

I have fixed the brake light switch by fitting a small wood screw through the switch cover with the head on the inside. The surplus point was trimmed with a Dremel. Brake lights now working, as is the cruise control.
I put the Lexia on it and no serious faults found, but no communication with the airbag ecu.

On Tuesday I managed to ge the immatriculation (registration) done. It was a bit tricky as the certificate de cession was signed by a daughter who had power of attorney over the ill vendor, and the woman at the sous- prefecture noticed that the signature did not match the one on the carte-gris. Fortunately I was able to get a letter of procuration from the vendors daughter, and that was accepted after a bit of discussion.
On Tuesday afternoon we drove up to Paris and had 3 days at EuroDisney with my niece and sister-in-law. It is a 3 hour drive from here, undertaken at a steady 135 km/h.
The XM ran faultlessly, and in each direction achieved 9.8 l/100km (29 MPG) on the trip computer, which is exactly the same as my Xantia V6s have achieved at the same speed.
On the way back we passed a diesel XM towing a very large caravan.
