absolutely joyous to see how this project is developing

really looking forward to seeing it in the flesh!
Thank you so much, your support and the support of this group is very important. The positive vibes really do help and it will be great when the V6 is finally through an MOT and I can start improving the aesthetics even further.😁👍

Well Peter is back from his trip to New Zealand, so we will get the project started again. I will start giving updates again. Very excited about getting the XM back on the road this year😁👍

Hi All, I will be going down to Wisbech soon and maybe cleaning under the XM, whilst it's on a lift. I was thinking of wire brushing it and using rust eater. What surface treatment would you recommend, stone chip? Hammerite? It's not too bad under there but I would be interested in your suggestions. Many Thank...Derek

A primer that grips well is best, possibly an etch primer, followed by chassis paint then maybe underseal.
Other paints work well, but won't last as long. Nothing wrong with old fashioned red oxide as a primer.

Bitumastic paint is a good waterproofer, but being a soft paint, does wear off.
Epoxy paints are very hard, but don't really grip the surface well. One chip and water creeps underneath.

If the sills have been welded, or don't need any, spray rustproofing inside the sections.

Hi All, I have been quiet for a while but I thought I should post an update on the recommissioning/restore on my V6. Firstly, it is good news, it is almost ready for an MOT but it has not been as easy as we first thought. It’s a good job it’s with Peter and his brilliant facilities, because I would not have been able to do some of the work that was needed.
As I have already posted, the car went to Pleiades to have the suspension and steering rack leak sorted and they did a fine job, for reasonable money. The delay since then has really been about Peter finding time to do the work but since his return from New Zealand, he has cracked on.
The big issue has been rust, despite the car being in my garage for 21 years or so, there were hidden rust problems. The main one was the front near side jacking point. On investigation, it was rotten. Peter had to cut the sill, inner sill etc away and remake the area. I will post a couple of pics but he has done a fab job. There was also an issue with a small the floor pan, which he has also remade.
The car is now running well, lifting and driving and isn’t leaking fluid (at the moment). A new set of tyres have been ordered and should be on by the end of next week. However it still has a problem with the handbrake and the steering boots are split. So it is going back to Pleiades early April for them to sort those issues and then MOT the car.
After that it is coming back to Teesside for some cosmetic work by me. Deep clean the leather, sort the trim etc.
The final bits I need to find are some front sidelight lenses (very rare things) mine are cracked but Pleiades say it won’t fail it’s MOT on them, as long as they are safe. The other thing is a spare wheel holder, mine had disintegrated with rust. If anyone could help with these parts, that would be great🤔
I will give another update when the car has been in for its MOT. Thanks for all of the help from the people on this forum👍

Ba dum tss...no pun intended, eh? ;)

That is the most common rust area on an Xm and you're appears pretty mild in comparison to many.

I can only guess that Pleides didn't need the rack out to fix the steering leak, as that would have been an ideal opportunity to fit new rack gaiters...or do you mean track rod end boots?

Good to hear you are nearly there, you will soon be enjoying the sublime Jekyll & Hyde character of an Xm, though I prefer to think of it more as Muhammad Ali.
