There are a number of strut head modes of failure.
The most dangerous is axial tearing of the rubber in a ring parallel to the strut rod.
As Dieselman says hard running on flat spheres can cause this.
Can happen even without any rusting involved.
Starts from the underside of the rubber, pull the gaiter down to examine.
Look for radial cracks starting at the ends of the fore and aft indents in the rubber.

Somehow, this sodding car is still filling up with water. The headlining was soaked again today. Sunroof is entirely sealed up (glass to rubber as well as rubber to aperture). Roof rack mounts sealed up. Aerial Captain Tolley'd and also the leak seems further back than that. I'm entirely baffled. It is parked very slightly nose-down. Is it possible that water is leaking in at the back and somehow coming down the rear sunroof drains? What route do they take?

Rear sunroof drains discharge through the top of the rear wheel arches.
Is the sunroof 100% sealed? If it is and the ariel is also there is nowhere else for the water to get into the headlining...........

Even if the aerial was leaking, it's wet uphill of that if you see what I mean. This is very odd.

Doubt it. It's definitely rain coming in.

We've had three days of almost constant rain and no further water ingress. Thinking the sunroof might not have been properly seated and the increased water had simply overwhelmed the drain tubes. Hopefully.

Swimming pool in my XM again. :( Front and rear passenger footwells getting wet, but only on the N/S. The camber of the road means water runs off the L/H side of the car. I'm going to try the roof rack mounting holes. Headlining is bone dry, as are the O/S carpets.

Does the cubby hole at the front end of the front door trim fill with water?
If so the rubber "V" drain across the top of the door frame is split or come unstuck from the frame.
Try removing the nearside "A" pillar trim.
This and the "C" pillar trim are regular routes for hidden water flow from the roof to the foot wells.
