As to a LED running from 100 V, that's nothing, I regularly ran them from 220 V (we still had that back then, not 230 V) when I was still constructing and building rig as a radio amateur... :-) No time for that kind of stuff any more, though...

I agree with Gabor that there is considerable potential for the use of LED's retrofitted to XM's.
There will also be a number of ways needed to cover the various applications.
Minature regulation units are cheap and easy to obtain.
I also have recovered dash panels.
Once I have finished with the lights I will look one out and see on the bench how I can modify it.

If I were to replace the dashboard bulbs, I certainly wouldn't bend over backwards to accommodate dimming although if it comes cheap and simple, why not. I find the setup pleasing as it is ex factory, I admit to not dimming it at all, in spite of the longer life expectancy (with the bulk change I mentioned, I don't have trouble even on full brightness). But anybody else's mileage may vary as to their preferred illumination level.

Well, the XM goes in for major surgery tomorrow. Just hope this new seal works and it doesn't leak anywhere else. ;)
I am strangely nervous enough just taking it over to the garage, hope it doesn't suddenly fail half way down the M5.
I have used it once since it's mot, so I have been a bit deprived of XM usage. still it's going to get a new Cambelt too, so that a that sorted for a good while. :)

Don't fret Russ, she'll be fine. She's in caring hands and will be transformed when you get her back...

Well it got over there okay. Bit smelly... diesely when you stop at lights you can smell it a bit. left an ice damp patch in the road!! But it didn't conk out or anything on the M5.... so thats the first hurdle over and done with. :D Phew!

Matthew, the Mandarin car they have is a no go, and the bumper is quite scuffed anyway, but I did ask Andrew and he said he will have a look in their spares pile for you. I did stress it had to be the early grey kind. let you know later.

A little update. It isnt the drive shaft seal. We think it is a different seal at the back or under the pump. The Cambelt area is totally dry and all fine. Absolutely no point in disturbing a good seal. I have had a quick look at pictures of a VE Bosch and there seems to be a small plate low down at the back, with two screws. I bet thats the culprit. Anyway, I now have to take it to a diesel specialist, which i have found one here, and see what can be done. About to go and have a chat now.

Drat, i really thought it might be sorted today.

Sounds like the timing device cover Russ... Just an O ring behind it.

A pump reseal is not hugely difficult. My website has details of what to do. With care it can be done at home but you must be clinically clean and methodical.

Seal kits are not too dear. I'd recommend a full reseal and not just the leaky bit. If one is on the way then the others will not be far behind.

I'd advise going to a proper diesel specialist. The initial quote will be enormous as to provide a warranty the company will wish to recalibrate the pump. However, most will just do a reseal and no more but it will be totally unguaranteed and at your own risk. To save them a job do clean up the pump to sparkling before you take it to your chosen resealer as much time and money can be saved if they don't have to make it clinically clean.

The pump must be removed before any sealing can be attempted.
