When did they get catalytic converterts?

My XM came from Spain, it's a 1990 2.0. I assumed it came with a catalyst but it stinks really bad. It doesn't appear to be fitted with a cat. Did it ship with one? The fuel door says "sin plumbo".
Can I fit a cat if it didn't ship with one?

As the fuel door indicates "lead free", that would normally indicate it has a cat fitted, but they weren't mandatory until 1992.
If it smells a lot it is probably running rich, burning excess fuel.
I can't think of anyone that would chose to install a cat if not mandated.
Is there a Lambda sensor in the exhaust downpipe, if not it either shouldn't have a cat, or it has been removed and the Ecu wont be controlling the fuel mixture using closed loop.
The fuel injection system will dictate whether a Lambda sensor and cat were originally installed.
It might be possible to obtain this information from a Vin lookup.

It also has hot start issues, so running rich is a possibility. What could cause that?
The exhaust smells terrible.

There's no CEL. 1990 model so OBD 1 I assume?
I'm still learning about this thing. It's all new to me. I probably have the only one in the state, possibly in the southern US.

There are a few Xm over in USA. A couple of owners have been in touch with me via social media messenger for compatible parts there is also members on here too..
I'm getting together another parcel for a USA owner to export out to him. I helped an owner in florida last year who had quite a bit from me. Most models over there are the V6 12v prv engined cars.

Coolant temperature sensor would be my first thought
You really need to read any codes and tell us which engine management system is being used.
The Vin and Rp number should be an indicator as to which engine/engine management system is being used.
A vacuum leak would also cause rich running as it confuses the Ecu into thinking the throttle is open and engine loaded. These engines use a Map sensor to detect engine load.
For a 1990 Xm, I suspect the engine management will be either Bosch Le2-Jetronic, or Magneti Marelli G5, neither of which support a lambda sensor, or cat.
Bosch Motronic 3.1 is the first unit to have Lambda feedack.

Read the codes with a Blink Code Reader.

Yeah the v6 would have been a lot easier, as it came over here in cars like the Eagle Premier (Renault 21 to you folk, I think) and I believe Volvo sold it for a while. And the Delorean! Mine is a 2.0, which IIRC was never sold in any car in this country.

Ah but the prv in the delorean is a much older version then the xm one. The delorean is an odd fire where on the xm its an even fire, has a front balance shaft and with efi and cat has 175bhp..

Renault 25.
Apparently the R21 was used for the Medallion.
You haven't said where you are, however we have other members with the 2.0 injection Xm.
Antonio will probably be able to advise on where best to buy parts.

Items like engine parts are universal, so just diagnose the issue and search by part number.
Have you checked the Vin, Rp number and injection system type, yet?

I'm not sure how to do that.
I've been looking up parts in that way but seems different parts sellers have different part numbers. I'm not sure where I can get the original part numbers. Is there a site that has a proper microfiche-style diagram lookup for parts? I've been using Amazon UK but shipping takes a while and is a pain.
