Reality distorter required?

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Over inflated XM prices are only good if you're selling them.

I think most of us on here are more likely to be buying an XM than selling one.

It's also a case of insurance valuations etc. (For instance if someone so much as scratches a BX the insurers will try to write it off... I know).

Perceived value is important too for many - it's a class car after all. Trouble is, if the prices slip much further it will mean far more XMs will die. It happened with the BX, the ZX and now the Xantia.

And some of us do sell as well as buy! I agree though, some prices asked are well over the odds, (the original subject of this thread I admit)....

XM prices are undoubtedly increasing, or at least 2.1s are, I paid £150.00 for a 2.1 estate a couple of years ago and £250.00 for a 2.1 hatch with a replacement engine, not only are there none about for those prices now but even the ones that were going for scrap then are selling now.

I think that's the point. The diesels are now comanding much higher prices and petrols and petrol turbos may still be slipping, other than low mileage Series 1 petrols.

Last year you could get even a diesel XM with no MOT for £25-£50, now they are £300 minimum, even if they haven't run in years.

Is this a permanent rise in value of XM's or is it just a general blip in value that the scrappage scheme has caused for all near life expired cars.

To some extent the rise in prices will be partly due to the lack of cars available, or people want them more than before. I wonder how many C5 owners are going back to a Xm after they have been bitterly dissapointed by them? The other thing is us, Xm enthusiasts who don't want to drive anything else, so we have to pay more to keep this privelage. Also supply of cheap cars will have been cleared up more, either by people buying them or scrapping them, so there are less cars remaining. Another effect of the current economic climate is the supply of used cars is reduced, as people hang on to what they have, and put the purchase of a "new" car on hold.

Don't forget also that most Xms were manufactuered in the first 2 years of production.

this seller also has a VSX estate 2.D TD same colour with about 90k on it for just under £3k, looks very nice. In that advert he says he's sold 60 XMs over the years. I might go and have a look at it if its still available as i'm over in Notts in April. High price tho and i wouldn't pay that for it.

I would think its permanent John, with the 2.1 manuals anyway, seems to be a question of supply and demand, there are quite a number of people looking for them and very few coming onto the market, I don't think that there have been more than half a dozen in the last year.

I suppose, a lot of the poorly maintained automatics have met their maker. People in XM circles are genereally aprehensive about autoboxs, for fear that they will fail, so any manual cars are going to be sought after, more so for the 2.1 due the the 2.5 having a reputation for being more demanding on the maintenance front.

For the diehard XMers, what do you replace your XM with? There is no suitable replacement, other than another XM. The C5 is garbage in comparison, the C6 is outwith many peoples reach as well, also will the C6 be a good proposition when it becomes affordable? So Xm prices are going to rise some more, then probably level off, as the prices will keep the people who want a cheap banger at bay when they realise that a younger car is cheaper etc, so the market will be for people who have a XM now, or who want to have one as a classic car in the future. We will probably see less cars publicly for sale in the future in general, as XM owners trade amongst each others for cars etc.
