Thanks for the advice, this green XM is looking a good promise and the seller is far more helpful than the other one -in fact, he's just behaving normally really!-. Still, objectively, a totally unknown quantity of a car, but I like my risk (what else can u do with XMs anyway...)

It's a good idea to try get it MOTd on site and drive off. However, if it doesn't pass the MOT overthere though, can I choose another (Glasgow) MOT station for the re-trial, or it has to be the same station that examined it the first time?

It has to be the same test station for a re-test. I wouldn't be thinking of attempting a test on a car that hasn't been run for 5 years without some work first.
